Lean Body Mass Calculator
Lean Body Mass Calculator
A lean body calculator estimates your lean body mass (LBM) — the total weight of your body minus fat. It represents everything in your body except fat, including muscles, bones, water, organs, and tissues. Knowing your LBM helps track fitness progress, assess nutritional needs, and determine ideal body weight more accurately.

Lean Body Mass Formulas for Adults
The Boer Formula (1984)
The Boer Formula is considered one of the most accurate formulas for calculating lean body mass in adults, as it adjusts for differences between men and women.
Formula:
For Men:
LBM=0.407×weight (kg)+0.267×height (cm)−19.2LBM = 0.407 \times \text{weight (kg)} + 0.267 \times \text{height (cm)} – 19.2LBM=0.407×weight (kg)+0.267×height (cm)−19.2For Women:
LBM=0.252×weight (kg)+0.473×height (cm)−48.3LBM = 0.252 \times \text{weight (kg)} + 0.473 \times \text{height (cm)} – 48.3LBM=0.252×weight (kg)+0.473×height (cm)−48.3
The James Formula (1976)
The James Formula was one of the first widely used equations for estimating LBM. It’s simple but tends to slightly underestimate LBM in obese individuals.
Formula:
- For Men:
LBM=1.1×weight (kg)−128×(weight (kg)height (cm))2LBM = 1.1 \times \text{weight (kg)} – 128 \times \left( \frac{\text{weight (kg)}}{\text{height (cm)}} \right)^2LBM=1.1×weight (kg)−128×(height (cm)weight (kg))2
- For Women:
LBM=1.07×weight (kg)−148×(weight (kg)height (cm))2LBM = 1.07 \times \text{weight (kg)} – 148 \times \left( \frac{\text{weight (kg)}}{\text{height (cm)}} \right)^2LBM=1.07×weight (kg)−148×(height (cm)weight (kg))2
The Hume Formula (1966)
The Hume Formula provides consistent results across different populations and is often used in clinical and research settings.
Formula:
For Men:
LBM=0.32810×weight (kg)+0.33929×height (cm)−29.5336LBM = 0.32810 \times \text{weight (kg)} + 0.33929 \times \text{height (cm)} – 29.5336LBM=0.32810×weight (kg)+0.33929×height (cm)−29.5336For Women:
LBM=0.29569×weight (kg)+0.41813×height (cm)−43.2933LBM = 0.29569 \times \text{weight (kg)} + 0.41813 \times \text{height (cm)} – 43.2933LBM=0.29569×weight (kg)+0.41813×height (cm)−43.2933
Lean Body Mass Formula for Children
The Peters Formula (2000)
The Peters Formula is specifically designed for children and adolescents, taking into account their growth and development patterns for more accurate results.
Formula:
LBM=3.8×height (m)2.5+0.12×weight (kg)+0.98LBM = 3.8 \times \text{height (m)}^{2.5} + 0.12 \times \text{weight (kg)} + 0.98LBM=3.8×height (m)2.5+0.12×weight (kg)+0.98
Lean Body Mass vs. Fat-Free Mass
Although lean body mass (LBM) and fat-free mass (FFM) are often used interchangeably, they differ slightly:
Lean Body Mass (LBM) includes essential fat found in organs, bone marrow, and muscles.
Fat-Free Mass (FFM) excludes all fat, even essential fat.
Relationship:
FFM=LBM−Essential FatFFM = LBM – \text{Essential Fat}FFM=LBM−Essential Fat
Understanding the difference helps in accurately evaluating body composition, muscle mass, and overall health.
